The present topic is based on insight and understanding from the project that I am doing which is about Religious conversion.
I would like to address the questions which I have come across about human mind, Indian developing society, post modern world and religion.
In a post modern discourses a new challenges and questions have raised in significant concerns in understanding uniqueness of Human being (mind, behavior, spirituality and consciousness). Encounters with Religious converts have made me to think about the religion in relation to Post modern technological predominant society. It is been extremely influential interviews with converts, it is subjective and mystical experiences which I have tried explore with objectives of understanding the self or identity in relation to their religion.
Based on the theories, scientific works and experience of interviews I have understood that religion is institution or system which is still very powerful and influential system on human belief. Religious practices, rituals, spiritual experience of religion and conversion to new religion are subjective experience. In a Sociological perspective Religion is institution which as influences family, community, economy and politics of society. In a Psychological perspective religion is human belief, practicing religion or conversion might be symbolic but it involves human thoughts, feelings, and emotions which are based on individual reasons.
few examples which I have observed for conversion are like emotional bonding with new community which are lacking in family, overcoming personal problems through new religious practices, changes in identity through class, and finally rationality.
Few cases have provided an insight even in Post Modern society which is totally based on scientific Inquiry Human beings still try to be rational through Religion, The inquiries to understanding self, or understanding of life or understanding of nature and supernatural is based on religion.
The immediate question raises is Why religion? Mr.Jose Peter who as worked on Malayari tribal community replied to the question with example of his study that a tribal community which is having settled cultivation looks for main stream religion for conversion through education from Christianity for further development of economy and society.
My question gets complicated further that what is the differences in main stream religion and oriental beliefs? how does religion facilitate in development of Post modern society? what is religion in Post modern world?
I am assuming that Religion in Post modern world as an institution which makes Human life closer to nature, the reason behind this is teaching of Islam says to be simple, Christianity says to be rationale, Hinduism and Buddhism says to be natural and hold to nature.
But there is contradiction in current scenario and the above assumption, post modernism is more technology oriented and religious ideologies are opposite to it.
I will be taking this question further and try to understand with proper studies and experiences.
